Some thoughts about My Song 17

I consider this song my Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan. The harmonica on this is actually a bunch of loops of harmonica playing that I chopped up so fine that I created that little intro solo.

This song almost got kicked to the curb cuz I couldn’t think of any lyrics. And it is not the kind of song, like my instrumentals that I have. It wasn’t that type of song. It needed a lyric so I actually…The way I write songs I title them My Son One, My Song Two. Well, this was the 17th song that I wrote in the past 5 years and I went with it and came up with this.

Chaz Reed is on the “Flow”. He did a great job making it positive. I asked him to make the “Flow” positive. When I wrote the lyrics, it was kind of a challenge to not put the song aside but instead go with it and use the title “My Song 17” and try to figure out a direction to go. Well, in the lyrics it says “I found it.” And I did find it and it became this.

Growing up I deeply influenced by the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. I feel that a lot of credit for this song goes to them. David Eiland is playing the saxophone on this song. Incredible musician, all around musician. He plays guitar, bass, drums, saxophone and I don’t know what else, but he does it all well. He is only on saxophone on the music on P. Music-Series One.

That’s how this song was created. By not knowing what to do with it.
